What to Expect at a Maternity Photoshoot: An Honest Walkthrough for First-Time Moms (Delhi NCR, 2026)

What Really Happens in Those Three Hours

The messages we get at 11 at night rarely ask about packages. They ask what to expect at a maternity photoshoot, and underneath that, something quieter. Will I feel silly doing this?

You are 32 weeks in. Your ankles have opinions of their own, you have not slept properly since week 28, and somewhere on Instagram you saved a maternity portrait that made you a little teary. Booking it still feels like a leap, because you have no real idea what happens inside that studio for three hours.

So here is what to expect at a maternity photoshoot, start to finish. What gets decided before the day, what the day itself looks like, and what happens if your body decides not to cooperate.

At Moments Creator by Anushka, we have photographed more than 3,000 families across Delhi NCR over a decade, through 400+ themes built from scratch rather than pulled off a shelf. Anushka personally shoots every maternity session at our Dwarka studio, from the planning call to the final gallery. Everything below is what we would tell a close friend who just found out she is pregnant and is quietly dreading being photographed.

The Real Question Behind “What to Expect at a Maternity Photoshoot”

Mothers who ask us what to expect at a maternity photoshoot are usually asking one of these:

  • I do not photograph well, and I have gained weight in my face.
  • My husband goes stiff the second a camera comes out.
  • I will be in a drape. Who exactly will be in that room?
  • What if I cannot stand for long, or need to sit down every ten minutes?

Every one of those is normal. Every one of those is already planned for. Most of what a maternity photographer actually does has very little to do with the camera.

Before Shoot Day: The Planning Conversation

Nothing gets left to the morning of. A week or two before your session, Anushka takes you through five decisions.

The date. Somewhere between 30 and 36 weeks works for most pregnancies. The bump is round and photographs beautifully, and you are not yet at the stage where standing for twenty minutes is hard. Our week-by-week guide to timing a maternity photoshoot goes into the detail.

The theme. Floral arches, dark moody studio, outdoor greens, traditional saree setups, gender reveal. If nothing in our 30 creative maternity photoshoot ideas feels like you, Anushka builds something around what does.

The outfits. Gowns, drapes and sarees are part of every package, and you pick colours against the theme. Our maternity outfit and styling guide covers what photographs well. You are welcome to bring your own dress too.

Who is coming. Husband, older child, sometimes grandparents. Matching outfits for daughters up to six are provided, and we tell your husband what to wear so nothing clashes. Maternity shoots with an older child need a slightly different plan.

The time of day. Mornings, usually. Swelling in the feet and hands builds through the day, especially past 34 weeks.

The Week Before Your Maternity Photoshoot

Five small things that make a visible difference in your photos.

  • No threading, waxing or facials in the 48 hours before. Skin stays red longer than you think, and it shows in close frames.
  • Wear loose clothes the morning of. Tight waistbands, bra straps and sock elastic leave marks that sit on the skin for a couple of hours.
  • Drink more water than usual, all week. Hydrated skin holds light differently. This one is not a myth.
  • Sort your nails out. Your hands rest on your bump in most maternity frames, which puts them in nearly every photo.
  • Sleep the night before. Unglamorous advice, but a rested face needs far less retouching, and heavily retouched skin never quite looks like real skin.

Shoot Day, Hour by Hour: What to Expect at a Maternity Photoshoot

A maternity session with us runs three to four hours. Here is roughly how it spends itself.

First fifteen minutes. You arrive, sit down, have chai or water, use the washroom, look around the studio. Nobody points a camera at you. This part matters more than it sounds.

The next hour: makeup and hair. Done in-house and included in every maternity package. You sit in the chair while Anushka walks you through the running order for the day, so there are no surprises later.

First setup. Always the easiest outfit, always solo. You warm up before anyone else is in the frame. Within ten minutes Anushka will turn the camera around and show you the back of it. Watching yourself look good is the fastest cure for self-consciousness we have found.

Outfit changes. Two to four looks, depending on your package. There is a private changing room, and help with draping whenever you want it.

Partner and family frames. These come mid-session, once you have relaxed. If a toddler is involved we shoot their frames early, because a three-year-old gives you about ten good minutes.

The last twenty minutes. Quieter frames. Hands, light, your face once you have forgotten the camera is there. Mothers tell us months later that these are the ones they printed.

“But I Don’t Know How to Pose”

This is the single most repeated sentence in our inbox, and the answer is always the same. You are not supposed to know.

Posing a pregnant body is the photographer’s skill to carry. Anushka directs every frame out loud: where your weight goes, what your hands do, chin slightly down, shoulder back, breathe out. She demonstrates it herself first. You copy, she adjusts, and that is the whole process repeated a few hundred times over three hours.

Women who arrive convinced they are “not photogenic” usually stop saying it by the second setup. Being directed properly is a very different experience from being told to relax and act natural.

Who Is Actually in the Room

For most mothers this is the deciding question, and it deserves a direct answer.

Our team is entirely female. Makeup, hair, draping, assisting, shooting. Anushka handles the camera herself, so the photographer whose work you saw on Instagram is the photographer who shows up on the day.

There is a private changing space, and during drape setups only women are present. Your husband can step out or stay, whichever you prefer. You can stop for a break, eat something, take a call from your mother, or sit down for ten minutes whenever you need to.

This matters far more in the last trimester than most first-time mothers expect it to.

If You Are Past 36 Weeks, on Bed Rest, or Taking It Slow

Tell us when you book rather than on the day. None of this rules you out, but it changes the plan.

Standing setups get shorter. Most of the session moves to seated, reclining and against-the-wall frames, which photograph beautifully and cost you almost nothing physically. Breaks come every fifteen or twenty minutes whether you ask for them or not.

If your doctor has advised against travel, tell us at the planning stage. We will tell you honestly what is workable for your week and your commute from Dwarka, Janakpuri, Gurgaon or Noida, rather than have you take a drive you should not be taking.

What Happens After You Go Home

Nothing, for a bit. Go and sleep.

Your preview gallery, with every raw image from the session, reaches you within 24 to 48 hours of the shoot. You shortlist the frames you want finished. Anushka edits those personally, which is why the retouching across your gallery looks consistent instead of stitched together by three different hands. You receive the finished images digitally, and if you have chosen an album or wall art, those follow once you approve the layout.

A fair number of families book their newborn session at this point, because the 15 to 25 day newborn window arrives much faster than anyone plans for.

The Parts We Plan For, Because They Happen

Three hours in a studio at eight months pregnant rarely runs exactly to schedule, and we would rather you knew that in advance.

Sessions sometimes run long. Usually by half an hour, usually because a setup is working and rushing it would waste it. We build slack into the day for exactly this.

You will get tired. Somewhere around the two hour mark, most mothers do. There is a sofa, there is food, and the schedule bends around you rather than the other way round.

Toddlers do what toddlers do. We shoot the sibling frames first and keep them short. If your older one decides today is not the day, we work with whatever we get, and it usually turns out charming.

Swelling shows up more in the afternoon. Which is exactly why we schedule third-trimester mothers in the morning.

None of this is a problem. It is simply what a real session looks like from the inside.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect at my first maternity photoshoot?

Expect three to four hours in total. The first hour is makeup and hairstyling, then you shoot two to four setups with breaks in between. Anushka directs every pose, gowns and drapes are provided, and the Dwarka studio has a private changing room with an all-female team throughout.

How long does a maternity photoshoot take?

Plan for three to four hours from arrival to finish. About an hour of that is makeup and hairstyling, and the rest is shooting across two to four setups with breaks built in.

When will I get my maternity photos?

Your preview gallery, containing every raw image from the session, is shared within 24 to 48 hours of the shoot. You then shortlist the frames you want finished, and Anushka edits those personally before the final images are delivered.

Do I need to know how to pose for a maternity shoot?

No. Anushka directs every frame, demonstrates each pose first and adjusts as you go. Mothers who arrive worried about posing usually stop thinking about it within the first twenty minutes.

What should I wear for my maternity photoshoot?

Gowns, drapes and sarees are provided as part of every maternity package, and you choose colours during the planning call. You are also welcome to bring an outfit that means something to you. Our maternity styling guide covers what photographs well.

Is makeup and hairstyling included?

Yes. Professional makeup and hairstyling are included in all maternity packages and done in-house by our own team before the shoot begins.

Can my husband and older child be part of the shoot?

Yes. We plan family frames into the session, guide your husband on outfit coordination, and provide matching dresses for daughters up to six years old.

What if I am past 36 weeks or my doctor has advised rest?

Tell us when you book. We shorten standing setups, move most of the session to seated and reclining poses, and add frequent breaks. If your doctor has advised against travel, tell us at the planning stage and we will tell you honestly what is workable.

Is there a private place to change at the studio?

Yes. Our Dwarka studio has a private changing room, and our team is entirely female, so drape and gown setups happen with only women present.
